Stablecoins and Tokenized Cash Set for $3.6 Trillion Surge

November 11, 20252 Mins Read

BNY Mellon has predicted that the market for stablecoins and tokenized cash could reach $3.6 trillion by 2030, rising sharply from about $300 billion today. The projection highlights the growing link between traditional finance and blockchain technology as banks and institutions adopt digital assets for faster, cheaper, and safer transactions.

According to BNY Mellon’s new report, stablecoins—digital tokens tied to real currencies—could make up $1.5 trillion of the total. The rest would come from tokenized deposits and tokenized money market funds, which together could add another $2.1 trillion. The report calls these assets “essential tools” for improving payments, settlements, and liquidity across the global financial system.

Key Drivers Behind the Growth

BNY Mellon, the world’s largest custodian bank managing $48 trillion in assets, says the rise of tokenized finance reflects stronger institutional interest, clearer regulations, and improved blockchain technology.

“Tokenization turns idle cash into active liquidity,” said Sophie Guibaud, BNY Mellon’s Head of Digital Assets. She noted that the use of tokenized deposits and Treasuries could cut transaction and collateral costs by up to 50%.

The bank also pointed to growing regulatory support. The EU’s MiCA framework, which took effect in June, has boosted stablecoin use in Europe. In the U.S., lawmakers are debating new rules through the Clarity for Payment Stablecoins Act, while Singapore and Hong Kong continue to attract issuers through progressive licensing programs.

Tokenized Deposits1.0Settlements, Treasury Management
Tokenized Money Market Funds1.1Collateral, Yield Generation

Broader Impact on Finance

BNY Mellon believes tokenized cash will become a bridge between traditional and digital finance. The bank is already testing tokenized deposits on Ethereum and Canton Network, enabling real-time settlements and reducing reconciliation times from days to seconds.

Other major institutions, including BlackRock and JPMorgan, are also experimenting with tokenized funds and payment rails. Analysts say these developments could make digital cash a mainstream financial tool within the decade.

Challenges remain, including cybersecurity, blockchain compatibility, and fair access, but BNY Mellon says a “hybrid model” combining public and private systems can address those risks.

Analysts at Galaxy Digital and CoinDesk say the forecast signals a major financial shift. “By 2030, tokenized cash won’t be a niche product—it will be part of everyday finance,” said analyst Omkar Godbole.
